Berrettini and Mochizuki Advance in Chennai Open Challenger

CHENNAI: Jacopo Berrettini from Italy, the younger brother of former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini, caused a major upset in the main draw of the Chennai Open ATP Challenger by defeating sixth seed Sho Shimabukuro in straight sets.

Ranked No. 324 in the world, Berrettini won with a score of 6-3, 7-6 against Shimabukuro. In another match,

Japan’s fifth seed Shintaro Mochizuki advanced to the round of 16 by defeating Italy’s Enrico Dalla Valle 6-2, 6-1.

Meanwhile, the four Indian players competing on Monday were unable to secure wins in their final qualifying matches against higher-ranked opponents. Despite their earlier successes.

All four fell short in the final qualifying round. Chirag Duhan, 21, put up a strong fight but lost to seventh seed Yurii Dzhavakian in a third-set tiebreak, with a score of 4-6, 6-1, 7-6. 

Joining Dzhavakian and Agafonov in the main draw are second seed Kimmer Coppejans, fourth seed Hynek Barton, fifth seed Eric Vanshelboim, and 11th seed Maxim Zhukov.

Final Round of Singles Qualifying: Maxim Zhukov defeated Gueymard Wayenburg (FRA) 6-4, 4-6, 6-2; Kimmer Coppejans (BEL) defeated Siddharth Vishwakarma (IND) 6-1, 6-0; Hynek Barton (CZE) defeated Olaf Pieczkowski (POL) 6-3, 6-3; Eric Vanshelboim (UKR) defeated Manish Sureshkumar (IND) 6-2, 6-3;

Egor Agafonov defeated Dev Javia (IND) 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. Yurii Dzhavakian (UKR) bt Chirag Duhan (IND) 4-6, 6-1, 7-6.
