India’s Sahaja Yamalapalli showcased her dominance in the first round of the $100,000 KPB Trust Women’s Open at the KSLTA courts on Tuesday, securing a victory over Britain’s Yuriko Lily Miyazaki.

Aside from a brief challenge during the match, Sahaja, ranked No. 2 in India, displayed impressive shot-making skills, ultimately winning with scores of 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 in a match that lasted two hours and 14 minutes.

She is set to face Russian Maria Timofeeva in the next round, who advanced easily after Brenda Fruhvirtova retired due to a back injury while trailing 3-4 in the first set.

In another match on Wednesday, India’s top player Ankita Raina also progressed to the second round, overcoming Russia’s Daria Kudashova in a closely contested match that ended 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-4).

Despite feeling unwell and calling for a trainer while leading 4-0 in the second set, Ankita managed to regain her composure and secure the win.

She will next compete against the top-seeded Tatjana Maria, who narrowly defeated qualifier Petra Marcinko with a score of 6-4, 7-5.

Unfortunately, the other three Indian wildcards—Vaidehee Chaudhari, Shrivalli Rashmikaa Bhamidipaty, and lucky loser Riya Bhatia—were eliminated without making a significant impact.
