Jorge Martin claimed the 2024 MotoGP World Championship, marking a historic achievement as the first independent rider to attain this title during the MotoGP era. He clinched the championship by securing a third-place finish at the season-concluding Solidarity Grand Prix held in Barcelona.

Jorge Martin’s victory in the MotoGP world championship marked a significant achievement for the Pramac Ducati rider, as he successfully navigated the challenges posed by defending champion Francesco Bagnaia and the factory Ducati team. Although the season was not without its difficulties, several key moments contributed to the Spaniard’s remarkable championship success.

In the initial stages of the season, Martin established a considerable lead in the championship standings. Although this lead fluctuated throughout the year, he consistently maintained a competitive edge.

Martin held the championship lead after 17 of the 20 rounds in 2024, despite Bagnaia securing 11 victories in the 20 grands prix and adding seven more wins in sprint races. Martin demonstrated strategic acumen, knowing precisely when to capitalize on opportunities.

Bagnaia faced misfortune when he was involved in a collision with Gresini’s Marc Marquez, resulting in his first retirement of the 2024 season. Notably, he was running in fifth place and was at risk of falling to sixth while Martin was leading the race.

The pivotal weekend in Portimao allowed Martin to extend his championship lead to a significant 18 points, establishing a foundation for the remainder of the season.

Bagnaia had an ideal start from pole position and maintained his lead until the finish line aboard his Desmosedici GP motorcycle. With this result, he achieved a total of eleven Sunday race victories, in addition to seven sprint race wins, concluding the 2024 MotoGP World Championship in second place, just 10 points behind champion Jorge Martin. Ducati secured the Manufacturers’ Championship title, while the Ducati Lenovo Team triumphed in the Teams World Championship.
